Losing personal photos to data loss is emotionally rough as an individual or hobbyist, and can mean losing numerous hours of family video footage or decades of vacation snaps. But as a professional, it can also be financially devastating when dealing with clients and deadlines, leading to loss of time and revenue. You do not want to be that photographer responsible for losing someone’s wedding to a hard drive failure.
Luckily, fellow professional photographer Vanelli comes to the rescue by sharing this bulletproof backup plan, as outlined in his article at PhotoFocus:
The 3-2-1 Backup Concept
- Create 3 copies of your files
- Store on 2 different media
- Keep 1 backup copy offsite
Storing on two different media devices will make identical copies of your files, an ideal task for dual Drobos as one can easily recover the other. The third backup is an offsite solution of your choice (such as CrashPlan) in case of a localized disaster that leaves both home devices irretrievable.
Data recovery is an expensive last resort (think thousands of hard-earned dollars), making this simple ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure. Read on for more details about the 3-2-1 Backup method!
