Manually Copy Your Data
To manually copy your data, plug both Drobos into the same computer and copy the files from the source Drobo to the new Drobo. We highly recommend this solution for all users, as it allows you to take full advantage of the Drobo 8D’s speed by starting with new, high-performance drives and provides additional protection.
Starting with new drives provides the opportunity for maximum performance and protection. We recommend using 7200 RPM drives and an SSD for the rear Hot Data Cache technology.

Transfer Your Drobo Disk Pack
In most cases, migrating your “disk pack” (set of drives) is as simple as removing them from the older Drobo, and placing them in the new one. For full migration instructions, see this page.
*WARNING | DO NOT migrate drives when either Drobo is turned on. This can result in data loss. Once you move drives, you will no longer be able to access the data they contain with the older Drobo.
Supported Migration Paths
Drobo Gen 3, S, 5C, 5D/5Dt and 5D3
Before upgrading, make sure you can answer “yes” to the following questions:
- Is the Drobo operating normally?
- Are all the Drive Lights Green?
- Is the data accessible on the Drobo?
- Have you upgraded to the latest firmware?
Once the data migration is complete, you can take full advantage of the 128TB volume size by simply adding a “volume” within the “volume menu” of the Drobo Dashboard and copying all of the data from the existing volume to the new one. When you confirm that you have copied all of the data over, you can delete the old volume (Ensure you have a second copy of your data elsewhere.)
