What’s the story behind your photo? Photography student, Collin Blaney reflects on the journey that led him to capturing the #DroboAccess contest winning image!
“We were starting our drive home from Death Valley, a desert valley located in California, back to our home in San Francisco. With a six to seven hour drive home left to go, we had the option to send it all the way home or find a place to camp. As were driving up U.S. Route 395, we entered the Tiago Pass, a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. After thirty minutes, all three of us were feeling tired and I was impatiently searching for a spot to pull over for the night. Finally, we came across a small lake and decided to camp there.
I’ve always learned that it’s not good to camp near a water source because it scares off the wild animals so we actually camped a good distance away from the water. We setup our tents and immediately knocked out as our heads hit the pillows.
Early morning, we woke up to our alarms, calling us to watch the sunrise. We carried our tents to the water, creating an interesting composition. I couldn’t stop admiring the colors that were going on in the sky! Sunrises are my favorite time to shoot and when you get a good one like this, it’s almost hard to focus because of the excitement going on. We were running around like crazy trying to capture as many unique angles as possible.
For the next 20 minutes, we had a jaw dropping experience and had the entire lake to ourselves. So happy we decided to camp and not push on home that night, what a memory it will be.”
